Sailfish,  Dolphins and other pelagic species.

Every winter Atlantic sailfish hunt down the schools of sardines off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. Since a long time ago, sport fishermen have been traveling to Isla Mujeres to catch sailfish. In recent years divers, photographers and videographers from all over the world visit this area to witness this magnificent creatures underwaterinstead of hunting them.

Aside from snorkeling with sailfish, there are restaurants and shops to visit or you can rent a Golf Cart and get the whole tour of the Island. This is a very laid back and friendly Island with the Mexican Caribbean atmosphere.

Every day will be spent offshore Isla Mujeres looking for bird activity, which is the best way to find the sardine bait balls.  Although at times sailfish can also be found on the water surface without any previous bird activity or bait balls in sight. Once we spot a bait ball, we will jump in the water to witness sailfish preying on sardines. A nature’s spectacle.

Patience, good preparation, and a seasoned crew are key in order to find this animals. The encounters can last anywhere from a few seconds to 10 - 20 mins or more.

UW photo-pro Christian Vizl will be joining us on this expedition
