Each year the largest known aggregation of whale sharks occurs in the northern tip of the Yucatan Peninsula off the coast of Isla Mujeres and Isla Contoy. Whale sharks come to feed mainly on plankton and fish eggs, which brings them really close to the surface.
The whale shark is the biggest fish in the ocean and can reach lengths in excess of 16+ mts. Although the average Whale sharks we see during these interactions are normally 10-14 mts, there have been reports during previous years of up to 400 Whale sharks in the area.
Along with these gentle giants other pelagic species appear in the area as well . This is a snorkeling encounter in blue water, so no scuba certification is required.
